TRANSFORMATIONAL COACHING: GUIDING PEOPLE THROUGH PERSONAL AND WORKPLACE TRANSITIONS

With almost 20 years of experience working with young people internationally, One Rock believes the cry of the young generations is this: “Please help me with my purpose, priorities and pain.”

Drawing from the latest research – as well as theology, psychology, spiritual formation and leadership theories – the programme will provide participants with thorough grounding in theory and the practice of mentoring the next generation.

It will encourage participants to draw wisdom and insights from their personal stories and apply it to a range of situations that young people face today, such as mental health especially during times of change and transitions, merit and performance-based striving, burnout and anxiety.

Session 1

Definitions and integrative approaches to Mentoring, Coaching, Discipleship and Pastoral Care.

  1. Art of Active Listening.
  2. Skills of the mentor:
    • Fostering self-awareness: A coach aids in enhancing the participant’s self-awareness, helping them understand their own values, beliefs, biases and leadership style. This self-awareness is crucial for adaptive leadership.
    • Developing emotional intelligence: A coach can help individuals manage and understand their emotions, which is a key component of resilience. This includes skills like emotional regulation, empathy and social awareness.
    • Growing in empathy: Looking at how empathy can help build deeper, more meaningful relationships with others, understand what the participants are going through, and therefore provide better guidance and support.
  3. Establishing framework for coaching
  4. Perfectionism and burnout – practising and showcasing coaching conversations.

Session 2

Managing both personal and work-related change and transitions are closely intertwined with coaching. In fact, this is often the reason why people seek out a coach.

This part of the training will cover the following aspects:

  • overcoming resistance to change
  • developing adaptability and resilience
  • learning to discern
  • improving decision-making in times of uncertainty.

Resistance to change is a natural response when individuals feel that a change as a threat to them. It is a force that slows or stops efforts to implement new strategies or processes in an organisation or in one’s personal life.

This resistance can happen due to the following:

  • Fear of the unknown: Change involves a move from the known to the unknown, and this uncertainty can make people uncomfortable and resistant to change.
  • Loss of control: Change can often make individuals feel that they are not in control of their environment or situation, leading to resistance.
  • Comfort with status quo: People often become comfortable with their routines and the way things currently are, and any disruption to this can lead to resistance.
  • Fear of failure: Change often involves new responsibilities and roles, and the fear of not being able to adapt or succeed can cause resistance.

The session will focus on three key aspects to help us navigating change:

  1. Regulating distress: Adaptive challenges often involve changes that can cause distress within an organisation. A coach can help leaders manage this distress, ensuring that it is productive and does not become overwhelming.
  2. Promote self-reflection: Encourage participants to reflect on their experiences, behaviours, attitudes and results. This can lead to greater self-awareness and insights, which are key for personal and professional growth.
  3. Encouraging self-care: Physical health and mental well-being play crucial roles in resilience. A coach can support individuals in developing healthy habits such as regular exercise, good nutrition, sufficient sleep and mindfulness practices.

The above content will be spread over a number of sessions and will be supported by interactive and group work throughout in order to apply it to coaching.
