Bible reading for Day 8 | Joshua 2:8-11
“Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof and said to them, ‘I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed. When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.’”
Learn
When the 12 spies of Israel went to explore the land that God had promised them, it was a woman named Rahab that told them: “I know that the Lord has given you the land.”
Did you notice? God gave her the special honour of announcing this truth.
Rahab had heard of Israel’s God. She believed He was mighty, majestic and merciful. Not only did she believe, she said confidently that God had the power to give the land to Israel, and that He is the ruler of all heaven and earth.
She believed that He was so kind that He would save her, even though she lived in Canaan among the enemies of Israel. Then, she obeyed God by hiding the spies from danger.
Have you heard of God? Do you believe as Rahab did? If you believe, have you obeyed God’s Word? Hearing and believing must be followed by obeying. That is true faith.
God does not need successful people to do His work. He needs faithful people.
Besides Rahab, the Bible is full of examples of people whom the world thinks “cannot make it”. But by God’s power and love, they become people who “made it!”
Some examples from the Bible are Matthew the tax collector, Zacchaeus the chief tax collector and Paul the Pharisee who killed Christians.
Do you believe that? Will you let God change your friends, family and neighbours from non-Christians to Christians through you?
Discuss
1. Hearing, believing, obeying – which of these do you find most difficult to do?
2. Have you seen or experienced God’s power, majesty or mercy in your life or in the life of others? How has that changed the way you talk to God or the way you live?
3. Are there people in your life that you think “cannot make it”? How can you start believing that they can “make it” through God?
Pray
1. Pray that you will know Christ deeply so that you can believe in Him and know Him more.
2. Pray that God will help you see and care for people the way Jesus did. Ask Him to help you share the hope of the Gospel.
3. Pray for Singapore – our leaders, our churches and all who call Singapore home – that more will come to know and follow Jesus.
