Day 15: Together in Christlikeness
A LoveSingapore 40.Day prayer devotional

Bible reading for 40.Day 2026 | Acts 2:42
Two of the most intriguing verses in the New Testament sit side by side in Acts 5.
In verse 13, we are told that no one else dared to join the church.
But in the very next verse, Luke says that more and more people believed in the Lord and were added to their number.
On one hand, people were afraid to join. Yet on the other hand, the church kept growing.
So what is happening here? Luke is not contradicting himself; he is just showing us something amazing: That the early church was an irresistible community!
Let’s rewind to the beginning.
The early Church was an irresistible community!
In Acts 1, the disciples were very small in number; they were uncertain and afraid. But then the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost, and overnight, the church grew to about 3,000 people. (Acts 2:41)
The 12 disciples could not have anticipated any of this. They found themselves with neither a strategic plan nor a leadership manual that they could refer to.
All they had was a simple promise from Jesus who said: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses.” (Acts 1:8)
They were not given a system of management. They were instead given the Spirit – and a mission. So what did they do?
Acts 2:42 tells us that they devoted themselves to four things:
• the apostles’ teaching
• the fellowship
• the breaking of bread
• the prayer
From this simple devotion, something powerful emerged through the Holy Spirit: They became a community marked by love, they cared deeply for one another and they gave generously to all those who had need. In addition, God worked powerful miracles among them.
The people around them began to notice: The church looked really beautiful; they seemed to be offering a life worth living.
But at the same time, it also looked costly to be a Christian. It was not something you could just casually step into.
And so people were drawn to the church, yet hesitant to join.
Now let’s bring this to our context today.
We live in an increasingly unstable world. In recent years, we faced a global pandemic that shook our sense of security. And just as we began to recover, wars and economic uncertainties followed. Bad news just surrounds us daily.
Many people are quietly asking deeper questions: “What is the purpose of life?”, “Is there something more than just getting by?”
Who are we becoming? Are we a people centred on Christ, devoted to His Word, to prayer and to the fellowship of Christ?
Singapore looks stable on the outside, but many hearts are searching on the inside.
In such a time, the role of us, the Church becomes critical. The question is not just what we say with our mouths, but: Who are we becoming? Are we a people centred on Christ, devoted to His Word, to prayer and to the fellowship of Christ? Are we loving one another deeply and living differently from the world?
Because if we, by the grace of God, are doing this, then we will become a fresh expression of the early church. We will be a community that is irresistible to the world.
Our fellow Singaporeans will begin to notice us.
At first, they may simply observe from a distance. They may wonder: “Why are they so willing to care and to share when resources are diminishing?” They will be intrigued and want to know the answer, and as they draw near, they will encounter a beautiful throne of grace, a Saviour full of love, and a people – the Church of Jesus Christ – welcoming them home.
And that is how, I believe, we will turn Singapore Godward.
Let us pray.
Gracious Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your Word, for the picture of the early church, a people set apart, yet filled with love, a community both holy and irresistible.
Lord, make us such a people today. By Your Spirit, shape us to be devoted to the Word, to prayer and to one another. Let our lives reflect the beauty of Christ, that others may see and be drawn not just to us, but to You. Use Your Church as a light in this land, that through us, many will come to know Jesus as their Lord.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
Reflect:
- Are we reflecting the power of the Holy Spirit in our church? Do we demonstrate a better way to do life?
- Are we willing to care and share for those who are not within our church family, bringing the love of Christ to those yet to know Him?
- Are we a holy people unto the Lord, devoted to the Word, to prayer and fellowship?
Pray:
- That the Church today will draw from the lessons of the early Church, devoting ourselves to teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread and prayer and growing as a community of love.
- That in our uncertain world, Christians will be a beacon of hope to those who see the peace and assurance we have in Christ.
- That as we become an irresistible Church we will see many declare Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.
