In the wake of a church in Singapore being identified as a possible coronavirus cluster, the National Council of Churches of Singapore (NCCS) has issued an advisory stating that churches should proceed with regular services, but with “strict” implementation of Government-issued control measures.

On February 8, 2020, the Ministry of Health identified The Life Church and Missions in Paya Lebar as a possible new cluster comprising five cases, including two Chinese Nationals from Wuhan, the likely source of this current strain of novel coronavirus.

“The NCCS is of the view that unless otherwise advised, all regular worship services should continue under the control measures issued by the Government and the heads of our respective denominations,” the Council stated in a message to member churches on Monday, February 10.

These measures include:
• Temperature screening
• Denial of entry into services for those showing symptoms such as cough or runny nose 
• Ensuring service venues are well ventilated, adequately equipped with handwashing facilities, and cleaned more frequently
• Having church attendees avoid handshakes and hugs during this period, and opting for other forms of greeting

The NCCS called on believers to bear with the inconvenience of such measures for now.

“As Christians who are called to be responsible members of our society, we should implement these measures strictly and submit ourselves willingly to the inconveniences they inevitably bring,” said the Council.

“For such a time, let us stand in solidarity with our nation and continue to commit the evolving situation to the Sovereign Lord in earnest prayer. Give thanks to God for our Government and especially remember the healthcare workers in the frontline.”
