The Methodist Church in Singapore has elected Rev Reuben Ng to be the new President of the Trinity Annual Conference on November 19, 2024.
Rev Ng has been a pastor of The Methodist Church in Singapore for 17 years and has served in various positions in both the General and Trinity Annual Conferences of the Methodist Church in Singapore.
He is a graduate of Trinity Theological College Singapore. He is married to Angela, and they have two young adult daughters, Faith and Eliza.
“His grace will be sufficient”
“If it’s His will, His grace will be sufficient,” said Rev Ng of his appointment.
Sharing his plans and hopes with Salt&Light, he said: “As we approach our 140th Anniversary in MCS and as we face challenges as well as opportunities in TRAC, I am reminded that the truth found in the scripture from which the first Methodist sermon was preached from in 1885 still rings true — ‘…Not by might, not by power, but by my spirit, says the Lord of hosts.’ (Zech 4:6)”
He added, “As Oldham and Thoburn arrived in a new land relying heavily on faith and the power of the Holy Spirit, so too must we as we seek to do His will in TRAC in the days ahead.”
William Oldham and James Thoburn were the first Methodist missionaries to land in Singapore in Feb 7, 1885. In a little over two weeks, the Methodist Church in Singapore was constituted on Feb 23, 1885 after fervent evangelistic meetings at the Town Hall (now Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall) brought in the earliest converts.
A brief history of Rev Ng
Born to Methodist parents, Rev Ng was baptised in Paya Lebar Methodist Church and grew up in Toa Payoh Methodist Church.
He attended Anglo-Chinese School, where he experienced inner transformation one day in primary school. During the Religious Emphasis Week, he watched a skit that portrayed the crucifixion of Christ and the scene opened his heart to the reality of God’s love and sacrifice in a profound way.
Rev Ng was a successful Forex trader with a bank after graduating from the Singapore Institute of Commerce. But seven years into his career, 9/11 happened, and he chose to obey the call of God to enter full-time ministry. He, together with his wife Angela, left their jobs and entered Rhema Bible Training Centre.
After three more years at Trinity Theological College, he joined MCS.
Rev Ng will be installed as the new TRAC President on Thursday, November 21, 2024.
Earlier this month, Reverend Saravana Kumar was installed as the new President of the Emmanuel Tamil Annual Conference (ETAC) on November 9, and Reverend Lek Yong Teck was installed as the new President of the Chinese Annual Conference (CAC) on November 14.
