Bible reading for 40.Day 2026 | 1 John 2:12–14

Let’s read from 1 John 2:12–14 (ESV).

“I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his name’s sake. I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.”

When God looks at the Church, He does not want a club which is exclusive. He doesn’t want a corporation which is always about dollars and numbers. Nor does He want an institution which is more concerned about manmade rules and rituals. 

God says His Church is family. It’s a tri-generational community: God is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 

In 1 John 2:12–14, God identifies three distinct groups: Children, young men and fathers. He shows us that the blessing of the family is found in the intergenerational flow among them. 

Today, let’s see the Church as God’s family, and every generation carries a blessing the others cannot live without.

God starts with the little children. He says their sins are forgiven and they “know the Father.” 

The children remind the other generations that the Gospel is, first and foremost, about grace and identity. We are all born again into it and deeply loved by Abba Father. Children bring joy, wonder, energy and fresh perspective. We don’t grow out of being children; we grow on top of it. The blessing of the child is the constant reminder that our identity is a gift, not an achievement.

Next, God speaks to the young men. He says they are strong, the Word abides in them, and they have “overcome the evil one”. 

While the children are resting in the love of the Father and the fathers are reflecting, the young men are resisting. The young men are the “muscle” of the household: They are the builders; they fight the battles that keep the family safe, push back the forces of darkness, destroy the strongholds of our spiritual enemies and extend the borders of God’s Kingdom. 

Young men’s strength isn’t just youthful energy. Because the Word of God is abiding in them, they have the manual for victorious living in their hearts. They remind us that the Kingdom of God is a force that moves forward and the gates of hell cannot prevail against it (Matthew 16:18).

Finally, the fathers. God says the exact same thing twice to them: “You have known Him who is from the beginning.” 

These are the architects and the elders. While the young men are focused on the “now” and “what’s next” the fathers are anchored in the “beginning.” They have seen moves of God come and go, and they aren’t panicked by the “news of the day”. 

They know that seed needs time to grow and the harvest is inevitable because God is faithful. They give the young men the wisdom to know which battles are worth fighting and they give the children the security of a legacy. Fathers remind us that we are not here for a moment of time; we are part of an eternal lineage.

The Church is a family where the child brings the joy, the young man brings the strength, and the father brings the wisdom. You cannot have a healthy home without all three.

So, if you’re a child, rest in God’s forgiveness, know your identity and enjoy Abba Father’s deep love for you.

If you’re a young man, let the Word abide so you can stand, fight and win.

If you’re a father, keep sharing stories of the One who is from the Beginning.

When we honour each other’s generation, we don’t just have a “church service” – we are together in God’s eternal home.

Let’s pray.

For the children: Father, we thank You for the little children in this house, both the young in age and the young in faith. We pray that the revelation of forgiveness would hit their hearts like a fresh wind. Stop them from wondering if they are good enough, help them believe they are Yours. Give them the joy and the security of a Father who never leaves. 

For the young men: Lord, we lift up the young men, those in the heat and the thick of battle. We pray for the Word to abide in them. Let the Holy Scripture move from their heads to their hearts, and from their hearts to their hands. We break the spirit of weariness and burnout. Give them the courage to overcome and the vision to protect the generations behind them. Anoint them for victory in their homes, in their church and the marketplace. 

For the fathers: Holy Spirit, we honour the fathers and mothers who have known You from the beginning. We thank You for their richness of experience and their weight of wisdom. We pray that You would refresh their spirits today. Give them the grace to finish strong and the passion to pass the torch to those who are coming after. In the mighty name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.

Now, declare with me together: As one family and one city of God, we declare that we are not divided by age, but united by the Spirit. We receive the joy of the child, the strength of the young man, and the wisdom of the father. We are God’s household, all in and all together moving forward and the gates of hell shall not prevail against us. 

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen!

Reflect:

1. Has church become an “exclusive club” for us? Will we repent and make it a place for all?

2. Have we ignored or dismissed the other generations in church? 

3. What can we do to build an intergenerational flow among the fathers, young men and children of our churches?

Pray:

1. That the Lord will put in all our hearts a deep love and respect for all the generations in the church.

2. That each generation – the children, the young men, the fathers – will strengthen and empower one another.
