“What is God’s perfect will for my life?”

This is a quintessential question for all believers. We have a deep desire to know what our purpose is. The Bible has consistently revealed that God’s children are people of destiny. There are plenty of fascinating accounts in Scripture to prove this point.

Abraham was destined to be the father of many nations. Joseph was destined to save his family and kinsmen from starvation. Esther was destined to stand up against the genocidal plan against her people. Elijah was destined to be a prophet, operating in signs and wonders. Mary was destined to be our Saviour’s earthly mother. The list goes on and on. 

Perhaps you are seeking Him for clarity on where to go next and what your assignment is.

Here’s some good news. While you inquire of the Lord which specific pathway you should take, you can prepare yourself by growing in the purposes of God.

Let’s take a look at what Apostle Peter has to say on this matter: “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light.” (1 Peter 2:9)

5 Godly roles we can grow into

Isn’t it wonderful that this was intended for every born again believer? Peter was not writing to a special, elite group of Christians but to the general body of Christ in the Roman provinces of Asia Minor.

There are five distinct roles here. Let’s take a closer look at each of the roles.

1. You are CHOSEN by God

If you have repented of your sins and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, you are chosen by Him. Remember Jesus said to His 12 disciples: “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide.”

Likewise, celebrate the wondrous truth that God selected you to be His child! In spite of your sinfulness, God opened your heart to the Gospel of salvation.

2. You are a PRIEST for others

The priest’s main role is to bring men to God. When you pray with someone, share your testimony or preach the Gospel, you are operating in your priestly function. Unlike the Old Testament priests, you do not need to sacrifice animals to atone for a person’s transgressions because Christ was the ultimate sacrifice, bearing the sins of all who would believe in Him.

What an awesome privilege you have to be a minister to the people you meet!

3. You are HOLY in Christ

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Through the atoning sacrifice of Christ, you are given the gift of righteousness. Your sins are washed by His blood and you are made holy in Him.

4. You are God’s POSSESSION

To belong to the Lord is a precious thing. In this truth, you can be assured of His love, protection and authority over you.

To be His possession mirrors the following truth: “If God be for you, who can be against you?” (Romans 8:31)

You are either a slave to sin or a slave to righteousness. What a joy to be a willing child of our Master!

5. You are God’s HERALD

Everything you do as a believer should inherently be about the glory of God.

This is why Peter instructs us “to proclaim the excellencies of Him”. (1 Peter 2:9)

You have been given a great privilege to represent the King of Kings wherever you are!

These five purposes need to be constantly revived in your life because oftentimes there is a real and painful inner struggle.

There is a temptation to be passive in obeying what He has already revealed and simply give the excuse that we are waiting for God to reveal a specific pathway.

Simply put, if we will not obey the five purposes of God for us, why would we imagine that we would obey the pathway He reveals?

It would be better to trust and obey Him now as we seek Him for the next step.

May God revive our destinies in Him as we continue this journey of faith!
