Brothers and sisters, peace to you.

When we talk about young people, and at the same time speak of “unity and walking together”, who comes to your mind from the Bible? 

I think of four godly young men recorded in Scripture: Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.

In Daniel 1, we are told that these four young men were selected and brought into the Babylonian palace to be trained for the King’s service. Immersed in that environment, they were being shaped into useful servants of the Babylonian empire.

Yet, despite this, they resolved not to defile themselves with the King’s food. (Daniel 1:8)

Even when the chief official invoked the name of King Nebuchadnezzar, they remained firm in their conviction and refused to compromise.

In Daniel 3, their faith was tested to the extreme. Because Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to bow down to the golden image set up by Nebuchadnezzar, they were thrown into a blazing furnace. Yet, remarkably, they were not harmed at all.

Because of this, Nebuchadnezzar not only spared them, but also declared: “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego!” (Daniel 3:28)

In a society where ungodly culture dominated, how did these four young men live out such godly lives? Even when faced with threats, even to the point of death, they refused to yield to the powerful forces of Babylon and remained steadfast in their obedience to the Lord.

Scripture does not tell us much about their upbringing. We only know that they were chosen from among the elite families of Israel. 

So how did they do it? I believe the key lies in their togetherness and their walk together. From Daniel 1 to 3, we can observe the depth of their relationship. Here are three keys to unity we can draw from these verses.

1. Unity means being of one heart

Their togetherness shows us what it means to be of one heart. 

In Daniel 1, they made a shared decision not to defile themselves with the King’s food. It was this unity that enabled them to stand firm in a culture full of pressure. 

Moreover, when Daniel needed to interpret the King’s dream, he gathered his friends to pray together. This reveals their shared dependence on God.

2. Unity means walking together

Their togetherness shows us what it means to walk together. 

Although only Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego faced the fiery furnace, their courage reflected a faith that was shaped within a community. They declared with one voice: “We will not serve your gods.” Their faith was not individualistic, but something formed and strengthened communally.

3. Unity displays the glory of God

Their unity and togetherness displayed the glory of God. 

Their stories together formed a complete testimony that, in spite of persecution and crisis, when people remain faithful to the Lord together, God will reveal His power and glory.

Brothers and sisters, it is so important for young people to be united and to walk together. Otherwise, they may easily become isolated and follow the ways of the world.

What does today’s devotion mean to you? 

It could be an invitation for you to invite a youth (whether they are a believer or not) to a youth fellowship, so that they can encounter Jesus and walk with Him together with their peers. 

It could be an encouragement for you to join a youth fellowship. You don’t need to walk alone; in fact, you shouldn’t!  

It could be a call for you to bless a youth fellowship.  You can bless them with resources, your service or your presence.  

May our young people walk together in unity on the path of godliness, and be better together at displaying the glory of God.

Let us pray.

Our dear Heavenly Father, we praise You. You are the God who has led believers throughout all generations. We give thanks for Your faithfulness in the past, and we trust that You will continue to shepherd our young generation. 

We ask that You personally take charge of their lives, so that in this world that stands against Christ, they may not fall into temptation, but be delivered from evil. 

We also pray for the youth fellowships in our churches. We ask that You shape each fellowship, making them communities where young people walk in unity and grow together. 

Preserve all our churches, O Lord, that we may flourish in the work of reaching the next generation. Thank You for hearing our prayer today.

We pray all this in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen!

1. Do the young people in our lives have a strong faith community to lean on?

2. How can we support our youths to live to please God alone?

3. Will we encourage our youths to be united in their faith and obedience to God?

Pray:

1. That like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, the youths in our churches will fear God above all else and trust Him with all their hearts.

2. That our young people will walk united in Christ, spurring one another to love God and live holy lives.

3. That in our churches, adults will love and encourage the youth, support youth ministries and model for them a life in Christ.
