Warm, gentle and loving, Margaret Ong’s husband would tell her “I love you” at every opportunity.

But a decade after he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, he stopped acknowledging her as his wife. At times he believes they are divorced; on other occasions he thinks she’s dead.

“I fell out of love when all I saw were the ugly symptoms. How can you love this person?” she admitted. Yet through it all, she continued to care for him.
