In an earlier devotional, we outlined four reasons why we work, the first reason being that work is a divine command.
The second biblical reason we work is because our work is a means through which God brings transformation to our personal character. Work is a means to our personal growth.
Romans 8:28-29: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose. For those God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brothers.”
God’s ultimate goal for all of us is to be “conformed to the image of His Son”.
Oftentimes, God uses our work situations for His own purpose of moulding and conforming us to the image of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Have you not noticed that it is easy to be happy in church? It is only when we go back to our workplaces that our blood pressure goes up and our “horns” grow out!
It is in our work situations that we have to deal with people problems, authority issues, anger management, temptations, greed, lust, dishonesty and so forth.
God’s desire is to use our work as a means to bring about personal transformation.
As Proverbs 27:17 says: “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”
So when we face difficult situations in our workplaces, do not be too quick to quit. Instead of going on the default mode of running away, consider what the Lord may be saying and teaching us through these adverse circumstances.
Let us allow our work situations to uncover areas in our lives that we need to grow and mature in. I have observed that many who quit and move on to other jobs without dealing with their character flaws often end up bringing the same issues to their next workplace.
We escape the conflicts without growing our character. But God’s desire is to use our work as a means to bring about personal transformation.
Why not try praying this simple prayer before you leave for work in the morning?
“Lord, I thank You for the work You bless me with. I invite You to use my work situations to grow and transform me. Help me to exhibit Christlikeness in all my dealings in my workplace. Let Your love, peace and joy be visibly evident in my words and deeds throughout my day at work. I pray this in Jesus’ Name. Amen!”
Reflection and Discussion
1. Have you ever tried to run from workplace challenges rather than facing them and seeing personal growth through them? What would you do differently if you were to face the same challenges today?
2. Read Romans 8:28-29. What does it mean to be “conformed to the likeness of His Son”?
3. Reflect on any areas of your life that you struggle to submit to the Lord. What are the obstacles to your submission? What will it take for you to surrender this to the Lord?
