“Never in my life will I forget this”: Asbury University president Dr Kevin Brown

Calling the experience of an almost two-week long “spiritual renewal” experience “historic”, Asbury University president Dr Kevin Brown posted a statement yesterday (February 19) on Instagram declaring that “the continued flourishing of such a movement invites us to commission our Asbury community, visiting students, and other campus guests from across the world to neighbour-serving, God-honouring work”.
The service in its Hughes Auditorium, which is where nonstop worship has been ongoing for 11 days, was the final one. The Auditorium closed at 1am this morning.
“We are witnessing what Scripture describes as the Fruit of the Spirit.”
Public worship is to continue in the afternoons through Wednesday (February 22) at 2pm each day. A National Collegiate Day of Prayer will be observed on Thursday, and from Friday, Asbury University will no longer host these “renewal” services.
He wrote: “Since our regularly scheduled chapel service on February 8, there have been countless expressions and demonstrations of radical humility, compassion, confession, consecration and surrender unto God.
“We are witnessing what Scripture describes as the Fruit of the Spirit: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).
“While I remain profoundly grateful that staff, faculty and students get to be a part of God’s unique and powerful work on our campus, I want to be mindful of my mandate as a fiduciary of Asbury’s resources and student-centric mission.”
Dr Brown spoke of the “life-transforming renewal” he had witnessed in students and guests alike, and testified to the spirit of generosity of faculty and staff working between classes “to bring order, usher lines, pass out water and pray with students”.
They were a community going “far above and beyond in every way imaginable to accommodate our visitors so they can encounter the Lord on our campus”.
Ending on a personal note, he also said: “Never in my life will I forget this. Never in my life have I been so proud to say that I am a part of Asbury University. I write this with tears. The people here are so special.”
